Technical Notes
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
- Bleach aka Chlorine, hypochlorite, or brand names Janola, chlorox
- Chlorine bleach is effective against a wide spectrum of bacteria, viruses and moulds. Bleach forms an acid (hyperchlorous acid) which physically damages cell wall of bacteria or virus coat etc.
- Bleach can also damage surfaces and materials so care is needed.
- This product is a fast acting economical bleaching agent for use in Kitchens, Hospitals, Abattoirs, Laundries, Bakeries, Fisheries.
- Also used to disinfect water storage tanks (unscented 5% sodium hypochlorite)
- Used as an economic sanitizer in some commercial laundry – not suitable for colours and where there is high iron content in the water – causes yellow or brown stains that are hard to remove.
- Purchases of bleach products should be made regularly , rather than larger quantities that could be subject to prolonged storage as it has a limited effective shelf life; normally this is not an issue but we encourage customers not to overstock on this product.
- What Bleach is not:
It is not a detergent for cleaning; it may even cause some soiling to set on harder by denaturing proteins such as egg)
It may react and damage some dirt or soiling and destain eg tea cups etc, and assist with cleaning in this way
It will not keep dirt or soil in suspension (detergents do this by surrounding it and making it soluble in water). Detergents also cause “roll-up” (a bit like rolling a bit of blue-tack off something but at a microscopic level). Bleach does not do this.
If bleach has some criticism – it is due to people hearing that it is not a good cleaner – which it is not. But it is a good sanitiser of clean surfaces. It is still the go-to product for health authorities
DIRECTIONS
- Bleach is inhibited by soiling and dirt ( for any disinfectant to work properly – the surface must be cleaned first)
- Disinfecting water tanks - make sure that you mix the chlorine into the tank water as best as you can, using a clean stick or other method.
DILUTIONS
Diluted bleach should be made up in smaller amounts; the more dilute it is, the quicker it looses its strength.
- Household bleach – 100ml per litre
- General disinfecting – 40 ml per litre
- Water tanks - 67ml for 1000L tank
